Hunger Action Month is held every September to raise awareness about the issue of hunger and inspire action toward increasing food access.
AUSTIN, TX – This September, the Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) invites you to take action by “going orange,” raising funds, volunteering, and advocating for the issue of hunger for the 610,000 Central Texas neighbors who lack a consistent source of food. It takes many hands and hearts — including yours — to ensure every person facing hunger gets the proper nutrition they need to thrive Wherever you are, you can do your part this Hunger Action Month to help increase food access for those who are the most vulnerable among us.
“While the color orange signifies hunger awareness, this month is more than a color; it’s about taking action and joining a movement to ensure all Central Texans have the food they need to make ends meet. We are currently facing the largest number of neighbors in need of assistance in our 44-year history, including one in four children who will go to bed hungry and one in six older adults,” said Sari Vatske, President and CEO of the Central Texas Food Bank. “When we all work together, we can find solutions that ensure everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.”
The average food insecurity rate for CTFB's 21-county service area is 18.2%, which is higher than the state average of 17.7%. Of the communities we serve, food insecurity is as high as 22% in Bell County.
With the largest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid in history now signed into law, food and healthcare will soon be further out of reach for millions of people — including children. Hunger in America is a crisis — and together, we can meet this moment.
"We hope you will join the movement throughout September by making tomorrow possible for hundreds of thousands of people. Let’s show up for them and fill empty tables,” said Vatske.
