Young Philanthropists Raise More Than 42,000 Meals for Central Texas

Dec01

For the seventh year in a row A Legacy of Giving taught young philanthropists about the power of giving back with a food and coat drive benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas and Junior League of Austin's Coats for Kids.

43 school campuses in the Austin area participated, learning about hunger in their community, and organizing a student-led food drive to address the need in Central Texas. The food drive culminated with a Day of Service at the Food Bank when the children had a chance to unpack and weigh all of their donations.

Their hard work brought in 51,183 pounds of non-perishable food donations, which will provide 42,653 meals for Central Texans in need. One in four children in our community are at risk of hunger, making the dedication of these students especially inspiring.

Hank Perret, President & CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas says, "When you think about it, meals are gifts that change lives. The holidays are a special time for all of us but hunger is a holiday memory that no one wants to have. So what [the children] are doing here and what [they've] done over the past seven years is just amazing for everyone in the community."

A Legacy of Giving believes that if children learn to be compassionate at the earliest ages, they will continue to be engaged in their communities and offer their gifts of time, treasure, and talent as adults. The hands-on experience of raising food provides hundreds of children the opportunity to engage in and improve their community every year.

"When you think about it, meals are gifts that change lives."
