School’s Out – Free Summer Meals for Kids Are In

Jun09

This week marks the beginning of summer vacation for many children across Texas. It’s also when kids can enjoy free nutritious breakfast lunch and snacks at sites throughout the state. Children ages 18 years old and younger don’t need to pre-register or provide identification to enjoy a free meal. They can simply show up.*

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded program created to ensure children can continue to access good nutrition when free and reduced-priced school meals are not available. Unfortunately, only one in six children who rely on low-cost school lunch during the year participates in this summer program.

We’re improving access to the program as a site sponsor by recruiting, training and providing meals to community partners. Now in our sixth year, we’re hosting 44 sites in Bastrop, Williamson and Travis counties.  For more information, visit our webpage in English or in Spanish.

To find a site near you and to learn about the types of free meals available, visit summermeals.org, text FOODTX to 877-877, or call (877) TEX-MEAL (839-6325).

Help all little Central Texans have a happy, healthy summer.

Our goal this summer is to raise one million meals, which will help keep food pantries and soup kitchens stocked when they see the most demand for their services. Your support means children can enjoy healthy meals even when they cannot get to one of the food service sites in their area. Now through August 31, the Stumberg family and WM Medical Consultants will match every dollar you donate, up to $135,000. With every $1 you donate, we can provide 6 meals.
