"It's the Neighbors": Why Melissa Johnson Loves Working at Central Texas Food Bank

Jun04

For Melissa Johnson, CDL-A Driver at the Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB), the most meaningful part of her work isn't behind the wheel. It's the people she meets along the way.
Melissa supports Mobile FARMacy distributions and transportation operations, helping ensure neighbors have access to nutritious food and additional resources. While her role starts with delivering food, her impact extends far beyond the drive.

"Beyond driving the truck, I am doing one on ones with the neighbors," Melissa said. "I'm helping them to their vehicles. I am just having conversations with them because I want them to know that I'm here.”

That commitment to connection is what inspired her recent Team Member of the Month recognition. While volunteering at a Mobile FARMacy distribution, a fellow team member observed Melissa directing traffic, greeting familiar faces, handing out fresh fruit to neighbors waiting in line, and helping create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved.

For Melissa, making neighbors feel seen and valued is a core part of service.

"I want them to feel like they are cared for," Melissa said. "That it's a safe place for them. There's no judgment."

She is especially passionate about creating a space where neighbors feel comfortable and respected. One of her favorite moments at distributions comes from helping families with children who attend Mobile FARMacy events.

"I always say that we have a FARMacy daycare,” Melissa said. “So, with moms that bring their babies, I have many times held their babies while they shop. And that's really my favorite part. Holding the babies and just giving them a little break so that they can get what they need and not have to worry."

Melissa believes some of the most important support we can offer doesn't cost anything at all.

"Compassion is free," she said. "It takes nothing to be compassionate to someone."

That same appreciation extends to the volunteers who make distributions possible.

"I love volunteers," Melissa said. "I want them to know that they mean something. We're doing good service. I want them to have a good time at every distribution that I'm a part of."

When asked what service means to her personally, Melissa's answer reflected the dignity she strives to show every person she encounters. And after nearly two decades as a professional driver, Melissa says the people keep her coming back every day.

"Again, it's the neighbors," she said. "It's the neighbors."

As she reflects on her time at CTFB, she's proud that her natural personality has helped brighten the days of those around her.

"I'm most proud that how I am naturally, being a social butterfly, is bringing joy to everybody that I'm around," Melissa said, "That I'm making a difference to everybody that I encounter."
