Hunger Heroes 2016

Sep02

When the Food Bank was established in 1982, less than 330,000 pounds of food were distributed. More than 30 years later, the Food Bank now has the capacity to distribute more than 60 million pounds of food.

However, this has only been possible with the support from our community.

During our Hunger Heroes Dinner, the Food Bank celebrated and honored two community partners who went above and beyond in the fight against hunger: Fox 7 Austin and St. David’s Foundation.

When Reggae Fest, one of our biggest fundraisers, was rained out, Fox 7 Austin stepped up to spread the word about what the cancellation meant for families facing hunger. From in-studio interviews to social media posts, our media partner helped ensure the community knew what action to take to help the Food Bank. Thanks to their efforts, the cancellation didn’t mean a loss of meals for thousands of Central Texans who rely on our services each week.

The Food Bank’s mission is to nourish hungry people and without the help of the St. David’s Foundation, we would not be able to provide hunger relief to some of our most vulnerable neighbors: older adults. Thanks to their investment in our new facility and their continued support for our HOPE program, older adults can lead a healthier lifestyle.

This year’s event was incredible. It helped raise more than 400,000 meals for families in need.

We cannot thank our supporters enough, especially our Hunger Heroes, Fox 7 Austin and the St. David’s Foundation, for their dedication to making a difference in the lives of families!
