Food Bank Helps Single Mom Make Holidays Memorable

Dec05

Jupiter is a happy baby. She has already taken her first steps and recently said her first word- “mama”. These are her first holidays and Isabel, her mom, wants to make them special, but she may not be able to.

As a single mom, the holidays are tough for Isabel, even with support from her family.

Help Provide Hope for the Holidays

After Jupiter was born, Isabel decided to go back to school so she could provide a better future for her daughter. She’s now taking classes to become a pharmacy technician while balancing working part-time as a receptionist.

It will be another year until she finishes school and is able to get a higher-paying job. In the meantime, money is tight for the small family.

“Money’s tight but at least I get to spend time with my daughter as she grows,” Isabel said. “I really do love spending time with her as much as I can and hopefully we’re going to be really good in a couple of years."

To help makes ends meet, Isabel tries to keep her expenses to a minimum by renting a small room for both of them and getting hand-me-down clothes for her daughter.

After paying for childcare and bills, Isabel didn’t know if she’d have any money left to share a holiday meal with her daughter and family.

I honestly didn’t know if I’d be able to provide. I’m a single parent and it’s just me and her,” she said. “So it’s nice for us to share a nice meal together.”

After learning about holiday meal distributions at the Food Bank's Partner Agency, El Buen Samaritano, from her aunt, Isabel joined hundreds of other families in line who would be able to enjoy a memorable holiday season with family and friends thanks to the Food Bank.

At the distribution, Isabel smiled from ear to ear as she made her way through the distribution line and was handed a turkey, pie, canned vegetables and more to make a traditional holiday meal to share with her family. She couldn’t be more grateful for all the help she received.

“It may be something very small for you, but it is just kind of life changing and wonderful for us to be able to enjoy the blessings that you share with us,” Isabel said. “Thank you very much for giving our little home a little happiness.”

The holidays can be tough for hard-working families like Isabel’s, but you can make a difference. Please consider making the most generous gift you can to help. Thanks to matching donors, your gift will be doubled. That means a $10 donation provides 80 meals for families during the holidays. Help us provide hope for the holidays and give today.
