BREAKING: America Gives More Act Update

Dec09

Last month we told you about the America Gives More Act (HR 4719) legislation that includes tax incentives for charitable giving. Also included in this legislation is a specific provision for charitable food donations.

As of yesterday, the bill has been reworked so that the charitable tax incentives are a stand-alone bill now called HR 5806. This means, we have a new opportunity to get Congress to vote on this bill and a better chance of getting this passed. We had strong bi-partisan support for HR 4719 with 271 votes, and we need 290 votes to get this new bill passed. With your support, we know we can do it.

What you can do right now.

1. Call your Senators and Representative.

Just dial our toll free number, 888-398-8702, listen to the pre-recorded message, and enter your zip code when prompted.

You will be connected to your Senators first. State that you are a constituent, and give your name and the town from which you are calling.

Deliver this important message:

As your constituent and supporter of the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, I am calling you today to ask you to pass the charitable tax extenders (HR 5806) as a stand-alone bill before Congress adjourns for the year. This legislation improves tax incentives for food donation and would help farmers, small businesses and other donors to donate more food to food banks and other local charities. We waste 70 billion pounds of food each year in this country, and yet nearly 47 million Americans are turning to food banks for help. You can help the Capital Area Food Bank get more food to those in need in our community by passing food donation legislation before the end of the year.

Be sure to dial back in and speak with both of your Senators and your Representative.

2. Tweet and write on your Senators' and Representative’s  Facebook page. Find their accounts here.

Thank you for helping stock our shelves with healthy food so nobody has to go hungry.
