Help with Food Stamps

Important

Although “shelter-in-place” orders are in force in much of our service area, as an “essential service” the Central Texas Food Bank and our distribution network of pantries and mobile pantries are exempt, as are our staff and volunteers. Therefore, we are continuing to meet the needs of those facing hunger as best we can.

The Central Texas Food Bank’s social services team is continuing to assist clients with applying for SNAP (along with Medicaid, TANF, Healthy Texas Women, Medicare Savings Program, CHIP and CHIP Perinatal). We offer help with applications remotely and on-site. Our offices are located at 6500 Metropolis Drive, Austin, Texas 78744. 

For the safety of our staff and the community we serve, we have implemented social distancing models and can see a limited number of clients at one time on-site at the Food Bank. To get help with applications on-site, please call our hotline to make an appointment first at 855-366-3401.

If you visit us on-site with no appointment—and if we do not have a time slot immediately available—we will make you an appointment for a future date and you will need to leave the Food Bank and return for that appointment.

In addition to on-site application assistance by appointment, which can result in a completed and submitted application to HHSC, we are providing service in two other ways:

We can mail an application to you for you to complete on your own, or we can complete the application for you over the phone then mail it to you for your signature and attachment of any required documents. We will include a self-addressed stamped envelope that will need to be mailed by you directly to HHSC for processing.

Además de asistencia con su solicitud para beneficios estatales, que puede resultar en una solicitud completa y presentada al HHSC, brindamos servicio de otras dos maneras:

  • Podemos enviar una solicitud por correo a los miembros de la comunidad para que la completen por su cuenta, o
  • Podemos completar la solicitud para miembros de la comunidad por teléfono y luego enviarla por correo para que la firmen y adjunten los documentos requeridos. Incluiremos un sobre sellado con su dirección y para que el miembro de la comunidad envié por correo directamente a la Comisión de Salud (HHSC) para su procesamiento.

How We Help You

Our staff experts provide phone and in-person consultations in English and Spanish. We work in partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC) department to provide the following services free of charge:

  • explaining how the application process works and what to expect
  • completing and submitting your application packet completely and correctly to HHSC
  • convenient and private personal consultations
  • providing information on additional resources as needed

Your Rights Against Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Agriculture prohibits discrimination against its customers, employees and applicants for employment on the bases of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, gender identity, religion, reprisal and, where applicable, political beliefs, marital status, familial or parental status, sexual orientation, whether all or part of an individual's income is derived from any public assistance program, or protected genetic information in employment or in any program or activity conducted or funded by the department. (Not all prohibited bases will apply to all programs and/or employment activities.)

If you wish to file a civil rights program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form,  or visit any USDA office, or call 866-632-9992 to request the form. You may also write a letter containing all of the information requested in the form.
