Cook Time
1 hour
Serving Size
1/2 cup
3 tablespoons olive oil
10 dried mission figs, chopped (about ½ cup)
1 large onion, sliced
2 – 2 ½ cups chicken broth, unsalted
¼ cup pecans, chopped
1 bunch of kale, roughly chopped
Salt to taste (optional)

  1. Heat oil in a very large, deep dish pan and add onions. Caramelize for about 20 – 30 minutes over low heat.
  2. Add one cup chicken broth and chopped figs.
  3. Caramelize this together until broth is mostly evaporated, then add 1 more cup broth. Repeat until all chicken broth is mostly evaporated and figs and onion are dark and sweet.
  4. With just a little broth left in the pan, add chopped kale and nuts. Cover and let steam for about five minutes.
  5. Add ½ cup more broth if necessary and stir together.
  6. Add salt to taste and serve.
