Distributing 23,500 turkeys and essential groceries as federal closures and benefit lapses strain Central Texas families.
AUSTIN, TX — As the federal government shutdown continues and SNAP benefit lapses deepen food insecurity across the region, the Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) is stepping up to ensure no table goes empty this holiday season. Through its Joy Is Served Here campaign, CTFB will distribute 23,500 turkeys and essential groceries to families across its 21-county service area, reaffirming its commitment to nourish communities – no matter what’s happening around us.
"Hunger doesn’t take a holiday and neither do we,” said Sari M. Vatske, President and CEO of the Central Texas Food Bank. “Every turkey distributed represents the belief that no table should remain empty during the holidays.”
Throughout November, CTFB and its network of approximately 250 nonprofit community partners will host large-scale distributions from Waco to Kyle to East Austin, providing turkeys, fresh produce, and traditional holiday sides. This coordinated effort comes as food demand across Central Texas reaches its highest point in ten years, driven by inflation, benefit disruptions, and the ongoing government shutdown.
To meet the increased need, CTFB is investing $1.3 million each month to keep shelves stocked and programs operational through the holidays and into the new year. But the current situation is not sustainable.
“The need is urgent and growing,” added Vatske. “We are steadfast in focusing on ensuring every Central Texan has food on the table year-round and this holiday season.
Financial donations are critical now. Every donation has twice the impact this season: every dollar donated through December 31 helps provide six meals, thanks to a generous holiday matching challenge. Donations can be made online at centraltexasfoodbank.org by clicking “Donate Now.”
Volunteers remain vital to our operations. Community members are encouraged to register for shifts at centraltexasfoodbank.org by clicking “Volunteer.” If November and December opportunities are full, supporters are encouraged to check back for January shifts, because the work doesn’t stop when the holidays end.
