Five Reasons to Call and Tweet Today About the Supporting America's Charities Act

Dec10

We need your support today to create pressure on Congress so they pass this bill before heading out for the holiday recess. Here’s why we support this bill and why you should too:

  1. A Clean Bill with no Pork: When you advocate for HR 5806, it’s only for the three charitable giving tax incentives – no filler, no hidden agendas. Just 100 percent pure support for nonprofits like Food Bank dedicated to helping families in need.
  2. Democrat and Republican Support: You heard it right. In an often divided Congress, there’s one thing legislators have agreed on; hunger is unacceptable and charities need help to meet the need. In July, 290 legislators approved a similar version of this bill. We just have 20 more legislators to convince. With your help and political pressure, we can get Congress to work together on this important issue that can bring millions of pounds of food to food banks across the nation.
  3. Good for Business: Did you know that local farmers and other food companies send us million pounds of perfectly edible food they would usually dump? We’d love to rescue even more fresh food, and this bill will help us get there. They’ll get the tax breaks, we’ll get good food. Everyone wins.
  4. Good for the Environment: Our country wastes as much as 40 percent of the food produced, spending unnecessary money to run and grow landfills, releasing harmful methane emissions and wasting precious resources. We can’t save all the food from going to the trash, but with this simple bill, we can ensure good food goes to families who need the help.
  5. Good for our Clients: This is about produce and peanut butter, not pork rinds and potato chips. This bill helps us stock our warehouse with more of the foods our clients prefer, such as fresh fruits and veggies and other healthy foods.

Deliver this important message:

As your constituent and supporter of the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, I am calling you today to ask you to pass the charitable tax extenders (HR 5806) as a stand-alone bill before Congress adjourns for the year. This legislation improves tax incentives for food donation and would help farmers, small businesses and other donors to donate more food to food banks and other local charities. We waste 70 billion pounds of food each year in this country, and yet nearly 47 million Americans are turning to food banks for help. You can help the Capital Area Food Bank get more food to those in need in our community by passing food donation legislation before the end of the year.
