Our Strategy
Food for today. Opportunity for tomorrow.
Needs don’t exist in isolation. And neither do solutions.
Hunger is never about just food. Healthcare, employment, transportation, our local economy and the strength of our communities all shape whether nutritious food is within reach.
For more than 40 years, the Central Texas Food Bank has provided food for anyone who needs it. And we always will.
Now, we’re building on that work by looking at what makes food access possible. We’re addressing the conditions that contribute to food insecurity, convening people and organizations, investing in research that guides decision-making, and strengthening the systems that help make nutritious food more accessible throughout Central Texas.
Our promise is simple: We’ll be here when our neighbors need us, while also working toward a future where every Central Texan has what they need to thrive — starting with food.
The systems that shape food security are interconnected. The Future is F.R.E.S.H. is the framework we use to understand those connections and guide how we work.
The Future is F.R.E.S.H.
F.R.E.S.H. is more than a way to organize our work. It’s a way of thinking about food security.
We look at the systems that influence whether people can consistently access nutritious food — and at the connections between them. That means providing food today while also investing in research, economic opportunity, sustainability and health to help strengthen food access for tomorrow.
Programs describe what we do. Systems describe what we seek to change.
Our programs will evolve as community needs change. The systems that shape food access are more enduring.
F.R.E.S.H. helps us look beyond individual programs and ask bigger questions: Where are the opportunities to strengthen food access? What partnerships can move the work forward? Where can research guide better decisions? And how can the investments we make today create stronger communities tomorrow?
Five connected systems. One shared goal.
F – Food
it’s at the heart of what we do. We’ll always provide nutritious food to our neighbors while working to make food access more equitable, responsive and resilient across Central Texas.
R – Research
Good decisions start with good information. We use data, research and community insight to understand what’s changing, identify opportunities and help our region make smarter investments. Learn more about our research →
E – Economy
Food access and economic opportunity are connected. Through workforce development, local agriculture and other investments, we help strengthen economic opportunity while building a stronger regional food system. Learn more about our workforce training programs →
S – Sustainability
What we build today should last. We work to reduce waste, recover more food, strengthen resources and support practices that make our food system more resilient for generations to come.
H – Health
Nutritious food is essential to health. We work with healthcare and community partners to connect food with prevention, treatment and better health outcomes. Learn more about our Food is Medicine programs →
Together, these five areas help us see the bigger picture: food security is stronger when the systems around it are stronger.
How F.R.E.S.H. Connects
Food access is shaped by more than the availability of food. It depends on the systems around it, and on how well those systems work together.
A person may need food today, but long-term food security can also depend on whether they can find a job that supports their household, whether nutritious food is available in their community, whether healthcare providers can address nutrition as part of health, whether good food is being kept in circulation, and whether communities have the information and resources to respond when needs change.
That’s why we don’t look at these challenges one at a time. We look at the connections between them.
F.R.E.S.H. helps us see where those connections create opportunities for action. Research can point to where investment is needed. Workforce training can create economic opportunity. Partnerships with healthcare providers can create better health outcomes. Food recovery can strengthen access while reducing waste. And bringing people and organizations together can make solutions possible that no one could create alone.
Our role is to help make those connections — by providing food, bringing people together, generating knowledge, investing in solutions and helping move ideas into action.
The goal isn’t simply to do more. It’s to make the systems around food access stronger, more connected and more resilient.
A Broader Measure of Success
For decades, food banks have been measured primarily by pounds distributed and meals provided.
Those measures still matter, but they tell only part of the story.
We also ask whether more people can consistently access nutritious food. Whether communities are better equipped to respond when needs change. And whether the solutions we invest in today create greater opportunity and lasting impact.
F.R.E.S.H. gives us a way to look beyond what we provide today and toward what it will take to make nutritious food more accessible for generations to come.
That is what Making tomorrow possible means to us.
