Local Restaurants Help Provide Thousands of Meals for Kids In Need

Feb18

At select Austin restaurants, a night out or brunch with friends can make a real difference for kids in need.

The Canada-based nonprofit Mealshare’s mission is to end youth hunger by partnering with local restaurants to provide meals to kids in need across the world.

At participating restaurants, the Mealshare logo will be placed next to a few menu items. When customers order a Mealshare item, they'll also be providing a meal to a youth in need. For each meal sold, restaurants donate $1 to Mealshare. The donations are then distributed to local and international hunger relief charities.

With one in five kids at risk of hunger in Central Texas, we’re proud to work with Mealshare to ensure that kids in need have access to nourishing food during the weekends through our Backpack program.

Last year, 19 participating Mealshare restaurants in Central Texas donated more than $17,000 to the Food Bank, providing 71,500 meals for kids facing hunger.

“The Central Texas Food Bank is so grateful for our partnership with Mealshare! The program connects the community to the fight against hunger in a unique way that just makes sense. With one in five Central Texas children at risk of hunger, it’s especially great that donations from Mealshare directly benefit  our children’s BackPack program," Adiee Gonzales, Food Bank events specialist, said.

We can’t thank the participating restaurants enough for all their support. Huge thanks to Bouldin Creek Café, El Naranjo, El Taquito, The Steeping Room, L'Oca d'Oro, Austin Daily Press, Red Ash Italia, Contigo, Emmer & Rye, The Ginger Armadillo, Lick Honest Ice Creams, Pueblo Viejo, Thai Fresh, Buenos Aires Café, Bento Picnic, Kellie's Baking Co., Colleen's Kitchen, and Skull & Cakebones.

Over the past three years, Mealshare has donated more than $26,600 to the Food Bank, providing more than 106,400 meals for kids facing hunger.

Special thanks to Mealshare for making it simple for restaurants to make a difference for kids at risk of hunger. Thank you to our generous community for helping us fight hunger.
