NFL Star Kelvin Beachum Doubles Down to Fight Hunger on his Home Turf

Jul31

The temperatures reached the 100s, but that didn’t stop the community of Mexia from coming out to support NFL player and hometown hero Kelvin Beachum as he made a big announcement on July 20th..

Born and raised in Mexia, a small city about 40 miles outside of Waco, Kelvin is serious about addressing hunger in the area where he grew up.

With the Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry truck behind him, Kelvin stepped up to accept the role of Ambassador at Large in the fight against hunger in Central Texas. Then, he wowed the crowd with the news of a generous $50,000 donation he’s making to the Food Bank to support hunger relief in Limestone, Freestone and McLennan counties.

To double down on the impact in his home region, Kelvin challenged the Food Bank’s community of supporters to match his $50,000 gift – and pledged to double his commitment to $100,000 if other donors come to the table to match him.

The potential donations could result in a total of 600,000 meals for Central Texans in need.

After the announcement, Kelvin and volunteers from H-E-B, the Mexia community and the Food Bank stuck around to distribute more than 4,000 meals’ worth of healthy food to the nearly 160 households participating in the Mobile Pantry distribution.

H-E-B helped make the event even more special by contributing a shipment of fresh produce to add to the Mobile Food Pantry’s usual offerings, underscoring the company’s longstanding commitment to fighting hunger.
