Keylie likes to learn new things at school, especially about science, her favorite school subject. Though she likes school, she’s even more excited for all the things she’ll be able to do this summer.
The soon to be 9-year-old can’t wait for her birthday. Her aunt sells cakes and Keylie will be getting a specially-made cake from her.
With all the free time summer brings, Keylie is already planning her summer days to play tag and ride her bike.
When her dad is home after a day of working in home remodeling and her mom is done with work as a nail technician, the family likes to get together to draw.
While Keylie thinks about what her next drawing will be, her parents worry about making ends meet.
Even though Keylie is young, she’s not oblivious to the changes her parents have made to provide for her.
The family has recently had to move in with other family members. Keylie went from having her own room to having to share. With summer here, paying the bills is even harder.
“When my mom is on the phone with my dad talking about that they can’t really buy me whatever I want because they don’t have that much money to, like, pay the bills, and like, little snacks,” Keylie said.
Though her family can’t afford to get Keylie the extra snacks that she would like, they strive to eat as healthy as they can.
"[My mom] gives me a lot of meat and vegetables and sometimes I can drink coke, and sometimes juice, but mostly water,” Keylie said.
Keylie’s favorite vegetable is carrots and her favorite fruit is melon.
Home isn’t the only place where she is learning about healthy eating habits. Her school is one of the Food Bank’s 92 summer meal sites where kids like Keylie can receive healthy, nourishing meals and snacks.
“Because if I eat unhealthy, then maybe my body won’t work well, and I prefer eating a little unhealthy and more healthy,” Keylie said.
This summer, you can help kids like Keylie stay energized to play tag, ride their bikes and have fun all summer long. Thanks to our generous matching donors, your donation will DOUBLE to provide 2x meals for Central Texas kids facing hunger. Help bring back the joys of summer!
