Donation Dock Volunteer

The Central Texas Food Bank is working hard to close the hunger gap and we want you to join us! Our mission is “to nourish hungry people and lead the community in the fight against hunger.” We are accomplishing this by recruiting motivated, mission driven volunteers who have the drive to end hunger.

The Central Texas Food Bank is looking for Donation Dock Volunteers to work with our Internal Distribution Coordinator. This position serves at our warehouse back dock receiving food donations from the community and issues receipts for donated food.  These food donations make it possible for the Food Bank to serve over 75,000 individuals per week.  As a volunteer in this role, you will gain experience in a busy warehouse and develop your customer service skills.

This volunteer position is available 9am-12pm Monday through Friday and takes place at the Central Texas Food Bank, 6500 Metropolis Drive, Austin, TX 78744. We are seeking volunteers ages 18 and up who can make a weekly commitment to a minimum of 3 months.

This position involves manual labor such as lifting boxes of food up to 50 pounds, and the use of light equipment such as a manual pallet jack. Warehouse conditions include working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, so this position requires warehouse safety awareness. The warehouse back dock is not climate controlled and warehouse doors can be open to the outside, so you should be comfortable working in these conditions.

As a Donation Dock Volunteer, you will:

  • Maintain excellent customer service with both internal staff and external community members.
  • Keep accurate records of food donations received.
  • Provide receipt of food donations to donors.
  • Ensure food is handled according to safe food handling procedures.
  • Perform other duties and functions as needed, i.e. maintaining a clean dock area and donation bin.
  • Coordinate and oversee the safe and timely pick up of orders to agency vehicles and personnel in the agency pick up area. Assist agencies with check-in and any issue that arise while they are shopping.
  • Check daily schedules to ensure that all agency orders that are schedule for that day are ready for pick up.
  • Ensure that the agency pickup and shopping floor functions are efficient and going smoothly on a daily basis. This includes working with Food Bank warehouse staff* to ensure proper stocking of the shopping floor, order movement and quality control, and ensuring that all safety and shopping floor rules are being followed.

You are a great candidate if you are:

  • Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently
  • Committed to the Food Bank’s mission and values
  • Able to effectively communicate and interact with diverse clientele and staff
  • Able to represent the Food Bank in a professional manner under a variety of conditions
